Organic Community Garden Project
(just add water, determination, sunshine and
love)
rev. 6/6/11
Now in it's third year, the community garden at Relax4life Center had a kick off/planning meeting on Sunday, March 13th. On Saturday, March 19th, our group began preparing the garden, pulling up the remnants of last year's vegetation, tilling 2 of the raised beds and planting colder weather vegetables (spinach, kale, chard, snow snap peas etc.). Everyone enjoyed the experience as the temperature was comfortable and the sun shone brightly on our efforts.
We also planted tomatoes, peppers, watermelon and cantaloupe from seed in potting dishes to start inside (everyone took some potting dishes home to water and nurture) and we'll plant the growing young plants in the warmer weather.
Other work dates coming up for the next few months are
listed below: Come as often as you want, but no need to come every date that we have set
up as we know folks are busy. Please let us know which dates you are thinking of coming to
so we can plan specific tasks for each date based on the number of people expected.
Also, please note that if it is raining hard or snowing on a scheduled work day, we won't
have a work day. Call the morning of the planned work date if you aren't sure if we'll be
meeting (847-842-1750).
To send us an email with the work dates (see below) you plan on attending, click here.
Saturday June 11th 10:00a-Noon
Sunday June 19th 11:00a-1:00p
Saturday June 25th 10:00a-Noon
Friday July 1st 3:30p to 6:30p
How it works:
We will schedule regular work days to prepare the land and plant the garden throughout the spring and summer. Sign up for any or all of the days to help plant and maintain the garden. We will alert you as the fruits and vegetables are ready to be picked. You will have your own space to plant your favorite things and then you can share and trade with others. Join us and learn about gardening, have a blast with other gardeners and add lots of yummy, organic fresh produce to your fridge. Children are welcome to attend with their parents.
Take a huge chunk out of your grocery bill this summer and fall. Don't miss this fun and free way to connect with the earth and those in the community.
In addition, as a group, we will share our favorite recipes as well as canning and freezing tips as we move towards fall harvest.
Story of the Garden:
In the spring of 2009, we
set aside and created (with the help of many from the surrounding communities) an organic
vegetable and fruit garden on part of our 5 acre property.
We will be planting again this spring and maintaining & harvesting all summer
and fall. All are welcome to come help and
then enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor.
Those who participated in 2009 reaped considerable savings on their grocery bills
and were able to serve themselves and their families healthy, locally-grown and tasty
foods. Join us this season and plant
your favorite foods to enjoy all summer and fall.
